More information

Designated one of Scotland’s Great Trails, The Mull of Galloway Trail is recognised for its stunning views in south-west Scotland. Stretching from Scotland’s most southerly point, it travels northward along the east coast of the Mull of Galloway heading for Stranraer. The lighthouse at the start was built in 1830 by Robert Stevenson, grandfather of Robert Louis Stevenson, the well know author of Kidnapped and Treasure Island.

Created by the Rotary Club of Stranraer, the Mull of Galloway Trail opened to the public in 2012. Upon reaching Stranraer, the path links to the Loch Ryan Coastal Path, and then onto the Ayrshire Coastal Path. The Mull of Galloway Trail now forms a key part of the International Appalachian Trail (Europe) as it winds its way through Scotland.

It is generally good coastal path and well waymarked. There is no scrambling and no large ascents. The last 6 miles are in part on very quiet roads with little traffic. The trail is very scenic looking over Luce Bay and ending at Loch Ryan with views over Ailsa Craig and Arran in the distance.

Further information on the Mull of Galloway Trail can be found at www.mullofgallowaytrail.co.uk

The website includes additional details on the route, suggested accommodation and also some stunning photos of what you can expect to see along the Trail.

The Race

Sandhead 10 will take place over the last 10 miles of the Mull of Galloway Trail.

Starting with a scenic run along the sands of Luce Bay before climbing onto the dunes giving great views across the beach.

About 6km in the route crosses onto the quiet back roads leading towards Stranraer. A good time to pick up the pace after those tricky dunes!

A couple of farm fields and a woodland descent, and the route joins the Southern Upland Way for a short stretch. Don't confuse the signage, it's a long way across Scotland (If you're interested check out GB Ultras Race Across Scotland!)

Into Stranraer with great views over Loch Ryan, and a run along the front, past the old ferry terminal, and the marina. A teasing loop around Agnew Park before finishing down the pier!

Finshers will be rewarded with your awesome Acorn Trails goody bag and memories of a great run.

Race start

The race will start from Sandhead at 10.30.

A bus will be offered from Stranraer to the start. Please indicate on sign up if you require this, otherwise we can't guarantee you a spot on the bus. Please specify on sign up which bus you prefer to depart Stranraer. We will do our best to accommodate everyone's choice.

Race numbers will be issued at registration which will take place in Sandhead.
